Letter by BG B.R. Legge, Military Attaché, to Colonel Divisionnaire Dolfuss, Swiss Army Adjudant General, 29 August 1944

THE MILITARY ATTACHÉ
LEGATION OF THE
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
BERN, SWITZERLAND

29 August 1944.

My dear Colonel Divisionnaire,
My Assistant, Lt. Colonel de Jonge, has transmitted to me your telephone message of August 27th in which you inform me that Colonel Rudolph of the Internment Service had issued, erroneously and without authority, an order that American interned personnel attempting to escape would be fired upon by Swiss guards after the first order to halt.
I find from my Camp Commanders that such orders have been issued verbally at each camp. In view of the seriousness of this measure and the necessity for my keeping the War Department informed accurately of this situation, may I request a letter from you for record that these orders have been rescinded.
With the assurance of my high esteem,
           I am,
                Faithfully yours,

                     B.R. Legge,
                     Brigadier General, U.S.A.,
                     Military Attaché.

Au Colonel Divisionnaire Dollfuss,
Adjudant Général de
l'ARMEE SUISSE
